poor work
tarmac too thin
cones still there
deep gouging in road
puddling on new tarmac

As promised, I arranged to meet officers from Herefordshire Council and Balfour Beatty in Weobley, to have a look at the works undertaken last month, to consider what outstanding remedies there are, and to find out how it went wrong.

The headline is that Balfour Beatty had contracted it to Tarmac, who sub-contracted that work.  The first sub-contractor, not a local firm, did a pretty poor job, and was replaced by a local firm Shaws from Kington. They, Shaws, have undertaken most of the remedial work, although there are some bits that are "snagging" - for instance where the tarmac is too thin, some poor work around mains water covers etc, and a few places were in todays rain we saw puddles forming, rather than the rain running off. Those will be resolved as part of that snagging process. I have also been assured that the traffic cones - still there! - will be removed promptly.

I had larger concerns about the specification of the work; in some cases work was done on private land, apparently without permission, often badly. Similarly there are issues around where the pavement has been demarcated - or not - from drives, in some cases likely to cause damage to those (private) drives. I've been assured there will be an investigation as to how the work was briefed and how this came about. I will report back on that.

Of course the whole area is desperately in need of resurfacing, and indeed some of the dropped kerbs are not actually fit for purpose as the road surface is eroded, leaving a lip. Although I have not yet had an undertaking as to when that work will be done, I continue to press for it.

I've had confirmation that Tarmac, the contractor responsible for the recent works in Burtonwood, Burton Crescent, Burton Gardens and Chapel Orchard, will be back on site on the 6th/7th November to complete remedial works.
